26 November 2023 (am) – Matthew 7:13-14
|Andy Bruins preaching from Matthew on Sunday 26th November 2023.
These verses appear to complete a section of the sermon on the mount that began with Jesus saying that He came to fulfil the law and the prophets (5:17) – here v12 tells us that to do to others what we would have them do to us sums up the law and the prophets. The answer to how we will be able to live by this high standard of righteousness that Jesus has described in this section is to Ask, Seek and Knock (v7-8)…
Q How would you respond to the claim that all religions are worshipping the same God?
Q Read v13-14. What does Jesus mean when He says that the gate to life is small and narrow? (compare 19:23-24).
Q In what ways is this road narrow (the word carries the meaning of pressure and persecution)? What incentive is there to follow that road?
Q What are the gate and road to destruction like? Why is this road so popular? What does this tell you about following ”public opinion”?
Q What do you think are some of the reasons so few enter the gate that leads to life (see 13:18-23)?
Q What things might tempt you to turn from the way that leads to life? What truths will sustain you? What does Jesus mean by “life to the full” in John 10:10?
