This little section at the end of Paul’s first letter to Timothy contains instructions for those who are rich in this current world. Timothy is in Ephesus and he is contending with false teachers (1:3) who are using their position in the church as a means to financial gain.
In this short section we have some crucial, practical advice about how we should handle our wealth.
Q What are some of the ways that wealth can become a problem for us? Do we have to be rich for money to become a problem?
Q Read v17. What are the issues Paul highlights here? How can riches make us arrogant?
Q Look up Proverbs 23:4-5. What does the wise man say about riches? How is this very different from having riches in heaven? (Matthew 6:19-21)
Q Read v18-19. What are the rich urged to do?
Q What does it mean to have treasure in heaven? How do you get it? (see v19). Does this mean we can buy God’s favour with our money?!
Q What is the connection between generosity and “laying hold of the life that is truly life” (v19)? How might our thinking need to change regarding our wealth?
