Mark 10:32-45 True Humility
This passage includes the third of three predictions that Jesus gives about His death and resurrection, followed by the third of three embarrassing bids for status and power by His disciples.
Get the power of the contrast: Jesus lays out in detail the humiliation that awaits Him in Jerusalem, and immediately afterward James and John ask for the best seats in the Kingdom!
V45 sums up Jesus response:
“…even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Summary: The greatest thing you can do in God’s Kingdom is to serve others – that’s why Jesus is the greatest!
Q Why do you think James and John wanted to have the highest positions in Jesus’ Kingdom? What does this betray about the natural inclinations of our hearts (see also v41)?
Q What does it mean to drink Jesus’ cup and be baptised with His baptism in v38?
Q Read v42-45. In what ways might we behave like “the rulers of the gentiles” within our church family?
Q There are many obvious ways in which we can serve each other. What are some of the less visible ways?
