14 April 2024 (am) – Genesis 14

PodcastAndy Bruins preaching from Genesis on Sunday 14th April 2024.

In this chapter 4 kings sweep down from the North and lay waste to 5 cities in the southern-most part of Canaan including Sodom and Gomorrah – this is significant only because Sodom is now the city in which Abram’s nephew Lot now lives, and he is taken away as part of the plundering of those cities.
Abram comes to the rescue, defeating the Northern army and returning all the plunder to the kings of the south.
In this episode we are reminder of the folly of investing in this world rather than the promises of God and we are encouraged to follow the example of Abram who puts God first, turning his back on worldly gain.

Q What are some of the things that compete with God for first place in our hearts? Why are these things treacherous and unable to deliver?

Q In v1-12, the scene is set. In short we are being told the reason for the war against the 5 kings in the south, in which Lot is taken captive. What does this tell us about Lot’s decision in chapter 13:10-13?

Q Read v13-16. Who goes with Abram to rescue the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah? What does this tell you about Abram’s interactions with the people around him?

Q Read v21-24. How is Abram’s relationship with the king of Sodom different? Why is this the case? How does this inform us about how we are to interact with the world around us? (see also Romans 12:18, 1 Timothy 2:1-4 and 1 Peter 2:12)

Q Read v18-20. What do these verses actually tell us about Melchizedek? (see Hebrews 7:1-3)
How is Melchizedek i) a contrast with the king of Sodom and ii) a powerful pointer to Jesus?

Q How does Abram respond to Melchizedek? How can we follow his example?

Q Read Hebrews 7:18-25. Why is the Kinghood and Priesthood of Jesus such good news for us?
