The beautiful and good creation has come under the curse of God because of the entrance into the world of sin and death. Adam and Eve had been cast out of the Garden and away from the presence of God. Chapter 4 essentially tells us the rest of the story of their immediate family. Here we start to see what the effects of the fall really look like and how sin starts to break out in the hearts of mankind.
Q What kinds of things make you angry? What do you think leads to people losing control of their temper? Is anger ever okay?
Q Read v1-7. How would you explain why Abel’s offering was acceptable and Cain’s was not? Are there any indications in the text? What light does Hebrews 11:4-6 shed on this?
Q Why is Cain so angry?
Q How does God describe sin in v7? What must Cain do about it?
Q Read v8-16. How does Cain try to hide what he has done? Why won’t that work? What is Cain’s punishment? How do we see the mercy of God towards him?
Q Read Matthew 5:21-22. How are we like Cain? How has God shown mercy to us?
Q Read Hebrews 12:24. Why does the author refer to the “new covenant” and what does that have to do with Jesus blood?
