04 February 2024 (am) – Genesis 12:1-9
|Andy Bruins preaching from Genesis on Sunday 4th February 2024.
With the story of the creation and its Fall, the flood and the tower of Babel behind us and setting the scene, we now come to the account of Abraham (initially Abram). We have met Adam, Abel, Enoch and Noah, all of who walked with the LORD, knowing and being known by Him in a close relationship, but it’s hard to see the general plot of the story of mankind as anything other than a continual slide into sinful rebellion. However, God has made some wonderful promises, namely that He will hold back His wrath against our sin (8:21-22) and that he will provide for us someone who will prevail against the Serpent (3:15)! It is in the story of Abram that these promises will now start to be fleshed out.
Q How and why do people misunderstand what Christians mean when they talk about Faith?
Q Read v1. What do we learn about the nature of Abram’s faith right from the outset? What does he put his faith in, and why? (see Acts 7:2-3)
Q Read v4-5. What do you find remarkable about Abram’s faith?
Q Read v2-3 and 6-7. What does God promise to Abram? What must he do to obtain these promises?
Q Read v6-9. What is the first thing Abram does when he settles somewhere? What does that tell you about the nature of his faith?
Q What would in mean for our faith to be like that of Abram (faith that believes God’s word, Acts, Follows, Worships and Proclaims)?
