PodcastAndy Bruins preaching from Genesis on Sunday 3rd March 2024.

Summary & Questions – Genesis 13

This chapter stands in obvious contrast with the episode that precedes it. In chapter 12, after such a strong start, we see Abram stumbling as his faith is put to the test by means of a severe famine in the land of Canaan.
Abram moved himself down to Egypt, away from the promised land for a time, and things went from bad to worse (especially as wis wife Sarai was taken from him!) until finally God stepped in and delivered him. Abram leaves Egypt in shame, having taken his eyes off God and put his family in jeopardy.

Q Why do you think people are able to convince themselves that they have strayed so far from God that they cannot return?

Q Read v1-4. Where does Abram head to and what does he do there? From the end of the chapter (v14-18), how do we know that God has welcomed Abram back?

Q Read v5-7. What is the dilemma that Abram is faced with? How is this going to test his faith?

Q Read v8-13. What does Abram do? What is surprising about this? What has changed about Abram between this test and the previous one?

Q What does Lot decide? How does he go about making his decision? Where does he end up? (see also 14:12 and 19:1, 29).

Q Read v14-18 again. How does the LORD reward Abram’s decision to trust Him?

Q How might this story help you when encouraging those who have wandered to return to God?
