In the community

As a church we are committed to making a difference in our local community.  We believe that it is important to work, where possible, with other groups and organisations seeking to do the same.

News just in!

We've helped PC Dave Randell break new ground by working with him to record the first Derbyshire Safer Neighbourhood Team podcast message here at church!  Dave gives a brief update on his work within the Walton & West area, as well as an invite to the next neighbourhood meeting.

The Derbyshire Police are now looking to extend this out across the force as an additional way to pass information on to the community.  Watch this space - and their website! - for more information.  (Click here or click the helmet to hear the message!).

Links with local police

Since the beginning of 2008 we have been building up links with our local police team, the Walton & West Safer Neighbourhood Team and our Community Officer PC Dave Randell.  We have run several events with their support and are excited about the developing partnership.

Youth anti-social behaviour has been a problem in our neighbourhood and so we have worked together to find ways to help address this problem.

During the October 08 half term the team planned various events in the local area to engage children and teens in activities during their school holidays.   Some of these activities took place in the church.

We have also recently been offered the use of a local schools dance mat system to use during school holidays, so February half term saw a series of sessions for all ages taking place at church, supported by the police and run by volunteers from the church.

Over the past few months our committment to helping provide a solution has also involved running games on Somersall Park on Friday evenings in the summer and hosting Ozbox in the church activity hall for 6 weeks in January/February (which the church youth leaders also joined in with - and felt the pain!).

The church also provides a venue for PC Randell to hold his police surgeries so that local residents can meet him to discuss any problems or issues they may have, as well as providing a meeting place for the Safer Neighbourhood Panel.

In December 08 we became a Community Contact Point for local residents - holding information about the work the police team is doing, safety issues, and providing a means for residents to contact the team about non-urgent matters.

You can find more info about the team and also local crime statistics on the Derbyshire Constabulary website.

Litterpicks

We have been organising litter picks in the area's parks and green spaces since June 2008.

We meet at church at 10am to collect equipment unless otherwise specified..

Areas covered

The area we cover is growing, but all within the Walton area. We do a different park / green space each month.  Additional litter picks on Somersall Park will be planned in when we do games on the park.

Equipment for the litter picks is borrowed from the Walton & West Safer Neighbourhoods Team and SpirePride.

Want to help?

We would welcome other volunteers who wish to join us.  If you would like to help or want further information then please contact Janet Ayres in the church office.

Dates

We're just putting together a list of dates for 2010.  The first one is likely to be towards the end of February.  Keep checking this page for more information.
